This course will teach you the basics of Open Source Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using the QGIS software. QGIS is a free, simple to use, and powerful GIS that has professional-level capabilities (www.qgis.org). Open Source GIS is a rapidly growing set of tools used by students, professionals, and others for geographical analysis. You will learn about the power of Open Source, and the benefits of using QGIS and related tools.

Attend and You Will Receive

Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of completion from NC State University. If you bring your own laptop computer, you can take home the GIS software, several sample datasets, and extensive tutorials to continue your learning experience after the class. QGIS runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux OS. Those without a computer can use the lab computers, but still take home the various data and tutorials.

Expected Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will know how to use the basic QGIS GIS functions. You will know how to work with various raster and vector GIS datasets, how to manipulate GIS data, and how to create final, printed maps.
